Forgot my damn lyrics in the middle of my verse and had to resort to a freestyle. Haha. Great bars from the other folks in the cypher. Shoutout to TeamBackPack for making it happen and pushing a positive movement in the Bay!
3 minute+ freestyle at Balboa High School during their Youth Solidarity event 11/29/12.
Shoutout to the youth leader Oscar on the beatbox.
The Wake Up Call album came out one year ago to this day exactly, after months of hard work and preparation. Honestly I feel like I’ve gotten so much better since this came out and I look at the music much more critically now, but I still really stand by the message and content. Putting this album out opened up a lot of doors for me and I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished. If you heard this project, what did you like about it? What didn’t you like about it? What are your favorite/least favorite joints?
And for those that don’t know you can now download the album for free (or make a donation if you’d like) on my bandcamp page: http://dregs1.bandcamp.com/album/the-wake-up-call
This Wednesday in San Francisco! Come out and witness some great performances featuring Z-Man, C-Plus, Hopie, Rey Resurreccion, White Mic of Bored Stiff, and yours truly.
Around this time last year Kreayshawn had the whole music community buzzing. Millions of views on her video, magazine articles, features on MTV, shows, tours etc. Not to mention all the controversy around her and the White Girl Mobb dropping n-bombs. Well I just read that she just set a record for lowest album sales on a major label EVER (3,900 in the first week, on Columbia Records). I’m not pointing this out to make fun of her misfortunes. I’ll never ever cosign her as being a dope rapper (and plenty of suckas did cosign her- yeah that’s some sucka shit straight up), but even though I think she was overhyped I’m sure she was just doing what she loves and there’s nothing wrong with that. I pointed it out to show how shallow & insignificant all those industry accomplishments can be. Most of her fans are sheep (and if you readin this and getting mad, if the shoe fits…), who hopped on “Gucci Gucci” because it was the next hot thing but when the time came to go out and support her, they didn’t. Most rappers would give their left nut to get a million youtube views, songs with 2Chainz, a record deal, and a shallow hit single that had all the sheep jockin ‘em. But if you ask me, that music failed because it’s not timeless. It was designed to be a catchy, temporary hit single. And soon enough there will be another internet sensation to take her place. So what I’m saying is, if you’re an artist- musician, painter, writer, whatever- make sure you put your heart into what you’re doing. Don’t put your art out there with the hopes and expectations of these shallow industry rewards because in the end, that will leave you and your music feeling just as empty.
What up folks! Just wanted to let you know that I’ve just released the first single from my next project, an EP called Mood Swings. All the beats on the album were made by my good friend BIG Shawn of the underground group Bored Stiff. The album’s got a jazzy feel and is somewhat of a hip-hop tribute to the old jazz musicians. It will be released on vinyl, cassette, and digital formats, with a short theatrical film to go along with it. Please listen to, download, and share the new song here: http://soundcloud.com/dregsone/sets/easy-rider-single/ I’ve also included the instrumental and accapella for anyone who wants to remix the song in any way.
Check it out, spread the word, and let me know your thoughts! Much love.
